Podcast Club: Serial Killer Voyeurs: The Dark Side of True Crime

Event description

  • Arts and entertainment
  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Free

Between 2012 and 2018 over 200 true crime podcasts were introduced, and a 2022 poll found that 50% of Americans enjoy consuming content from this genre and 13% claim it as their favorite. This obsession with true crime drama goes even further when it involves serial killers. The recent Netflix drama, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, is an example. Within 60 days of its introduction, it had racked up 1 billion viewing hours, placing it with other cultural phenomena series such as Stranger Things and Squid Game.

This Podcast Club event focuses attention on the issue of victim representation and possible revictimization within this true crime. Please consider listening to Season 2 – Episode 10 of the podcast Where the Bodies are Buried: Todd Kohlhepp “The Killer Realtor” (https://audioboom.com/posts/8268571-todd-kohlhepp-the-killer-realtor). Kohlhepp is a recent serial killer – found guilty of murdering seven individuals. Throughout the podcast you hear about Kohlhepp’s life of crime – his methods and motives. However, little is said about his victims – two who are still alive today. An even more disturbing aspect of this podcast is the introduction of an augmented reality app that allows the viewing of his real-life crime scenes.

This podcast contains graphic details of various crimes which may be disturbing to some listeners. Listener Discretion Advised
