Poverty Porn 101: Images and Narratives that Other

Event description

  • Free
  • Inclusion
  • Open to the public

This event addresses the issues of when influencers drive through and film encampments of unsheltered people or non-consenting folks with addictions amid an “episode” and then posting to social media. We will present how these instances are more about the person filming and posting than about vulnerable populations for gain and profit.

We will explore what we now know as “poverty porn” and how to avoid exploiting individuals and communities when it comes to soliciting support, resources, and understanding.
