While there has been much discussion about different aspects of the ongoing war in Gaza, little attention has focused on the broader issues of sustainability. In considering the future of the Middle East, there are competing trends which lead to different trajectories for the region. Beyond military conflicts, acute challenges exist in the areas of water, management, climate change and biodiversity loss which have already begun to destabilize the region. Professor Alon Tal is a leading Israeli environmentalist and former member of the Knesset (Israel’s parliament), where he chaired the subcommittee on climate and the environment. He has been working to promote cooperation in sustainability between Israel and its neighbors for almost 30 years. In this lecture, Professor Tal will assess the sustainability challenges of the region, discuss the profound implications of the outcome of the present conflict on the future and consider possible visions that can lead beyond the very painful and destructive present dynamics.
