Representations of Death in the Religious Iconography of 18th-19th century Wallachia

This lecture proposes a typology of the representations of Death and analyze the various images of the confrontation between the human being and the macabre specter in the iconography of Wallachian churches decorated in the 19th century, following the routes taken by teams of painters who circulated these themes from one religious’ monument to another.

Cristina Bogdan is Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and dean of School of Letters within the University of Bucharest. She has published numerous studies and articles on Cultural History and Anthropology, and has been the editor of several collective volumes in Romanian and French languages. She is the author of two books: Moartea și lumea românească premodernă. Discursuri întretăiate [Death and the Premodern Romanian World. Intersected Discourses], 2016 (volume nominated for the Observator Cultural Awards, 2017) and IMAGO MORTIS în cultura română veche (secolele XVII-XIX) [IMAGO MORTIS in Old Romanian Culture (17th-19th Centuries)], 2002.
