The past 12 months have seen tensions escalate between the potential of artificial intelligence to positively transform society and the challenges of ensuring its responsible development and use. From calls for a pause on “giant AI experiments,” Senate hearings, and White House consultations to growing concerns around bias, privacy, and intellectual property rights, the still-emerging AI governance and policy landscape is hard to navigate. At the same time, the promise of AI is such that measures that hold back its development could themselves have far reaching adverse consequences.
Navigating this evolving AI landscape is becoming increasingly challenging. However, by drawing on lessons from past advanced technology transitions and leveraging new tools and frameworks, progress is possible. Drawing on his work on responsible innovation and the governance of emerging technologies, Professor Andrew Maynard will explore new ways of approaching responsible AI through the lens of responsible innovation and agile governance.
