Seral Bodies

Northlight Gallery's forthcoming exhibition Seral Bodies, is curated by Roshii Montaño and Ninabah Winton and will examine the contemporary practice of Indigenous photographers and artists: Rapheal Begay (Diné), Nate Lemuel (Diné), Sarah Sense (Chitimacha/Choctaw) and River Whittle (Caddo/ Lenape). In critical response to the Solari Foundation Collection, Begay, Lemuel, Sense and Whittle will re-interpret a photographic landscape captured non-consensually by a 20th Century Western photographer.

Extractive practices represented by photographs within the Solari Foundation Collection visualized a static impression of Indigenous bodies and sites, bound into photographic permanence. In this exhibition, the artists challenge a historic narrative through their dynamic practices to re-insert consenting, living Indigenous bodies and languages on Indigenous lands.

Seral Bodies opens Sept. 15 with a public reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Featured artist Rapheal Begay and curator Ninabah Winton will give a gallery talk at 6:30 p.m. Additional receptions will be held on first and third Friday, Oct. 6, 20 and Nov. 3.
