Surreal Circus is a new digital animated video installation that explores gender, sex and violence through performative media. Intentionally provoking adverse reactions by means of uncomfortable displays of gender presentation through time-based performances, combined with aspects of the simulacra and spectacle, helps to understand and uncover the nature of the gender grotesque. Exploiting sexually charged performance work, such as burlesque and other low-brow acts considered outside of the traditional societal norms, to push the boundaries of gender presentation through transgressive means.

This innovative animated piece utilizes motion capture technology recorded from local circus arts professionals to create an immersive experience. The four-channel installation in the Step Gallery space will be accompanied by several live performances featured in the film during various times of the exhibition.
