The Northlight Gallery and Step Gallery at Arizona State University are pleased to present “Tasvir — A Research Exhibition on Contemporary Iranian Image-Based Art,” running from September 06 to November 01, 2024. Co-curated by Sara Abbaspour and Mehrdad Mirzaie, these events mark nearly two years of dedicated work on the Tasvir Archive. In these inaugural exhibitions artworks by 60 artists who identify as Iranian from 8 countries will be presented. The exhibition at Northlight Gallery will introduce this research archive, highlighting its significant contributions to the field. Simultaneously, a complementary exhibition will take place at Step Gallery, in collaboration with Tavaali Publications and Dastras Photo Book Platform, which will be on view September 6 to September 28. This parallel showcase will explore the interplay between photography and the evolving medium of photobooks, emphasizing the role of narrative in Iranian image-based art. The Tasvir Archive seeks to reinterpret our understanding of Iranian image-based art. It is imperative to us that alternative and progressive narratives replace those that are limited, repressive, and censored.
