Join the ASU Library for the next installment of the “Beyond the Bookshelf” series on Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. You’re invited to a virtual conversation with Lindy Elkins-Tanton about her book, “Portrait of the Scientist as a Young Woman,” a memoir about her life as a scientist. Learn how Elkins-Tanton navigated challenges in her life to become the second woman to lead a NASA mission to a major solar system body. Elkins-Tanton will be joined in conversation by Karalyn Ostler, STEM Librarian with the ASU Library. Hear Elkins-Tanton talk about finding your purpose by using the tools of scientific inquiry to discovering meaning through exploring the wonders of the universe.

Elkins-Tanton is the vice president of the Interplanetary Initiative at ASU and Principal Investigator of the NASA Psyche mission. She received her doctorate from MIT in 2002.

If you are interested in a relaxing sketching session with the library's natural history collection, come by with your art supplies and start drawing. If you don't have art supplies? No worries, we have drawing pencils and paper on-site for use.
This workshop series takes place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 11 and 25, Feb. 8 and 22, March. 22, and April 5 and 19.

Seek and Find: Art on Paper Class Exhibition
Open during regular library hours from Jan. 9 until March 4, 2023
Seek and Find is the theme for this creative cartography exhibition. For the 9th year, this exciting exhibition is a collaboration between the School of Art and the ASU Library Map and Geospatial Hub. As part of sustainable art practice and exploration of related disciplines, students in the Art on Paper course brought new meaning to vintage topographical and geological maps originally withdrawn from the library collection. Inspired by the opportunity to work with maps, each artist created a two-dimensional and a three-dimensional original work of art.
The exhibit is open at Fletcher Library on the West campus during regular library hours. Plan your visit at lib.asu.edu/hours.

The Vault Gallery presents, “Nature Imagined,” a new exhibit featuring the artwork of Robert Palmer on display in the Downtown Phoenix campus Library from Jan. 9, 2023 until May 8, 2023.
Robert Palmer is influenced by nature and surroundings. His paintings are more than landscapes physically seen, rather imaginative or a reflection of feeling on a space remembered. His paintings are reminiscent of the past; capturing a moment in time to preserve a memory. Palmer has taken out the figure in the painting, leaving the viewer stage to focus in the plane. This transcendence from imaginative nature to reality is definitive in his work. The viewer is transported to an imaginative state from the canvas into nature. While the works look like natural places, they are really born from ethereal memories.
For over 20 years, Palmer has worked to capture the aesthetic and conceptual mastery of nature. Although nature is difficult to construct in one painting, Palmer seeks to tell a story of infinite locations, drawn by the constant changing emanating celestial light. Palmer graduated sum cum laude from ASU with a bachelor's degree in fine art painting. He has been featured in various publications. When he is not painting Palmer enjoys spending time with his family.
