Discover the stories behind “The May Lady” and the power of film in shaping social change

Join the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict and Arizona Persian Cultural Center for a screening of “The May Lady” (بانوی اردیبهشت), a poignant exploration of a woman navigating the complexities of motherhood and womanhood in a challenging society. This Iranian film (with English subtitles, 84 minutes) follows Forugh Kia, a documentary filmmaker, as she faces personal and professional dilemmas while balancing her career and family life.

After the screening, stay for a thought-provoking moderated discussion with the film's award-winning director, Rakhshan Banietemad, and moderator Ida Mansourian. The evening will conclude with an audience Q&A, offering a chance for deeper engagement with Ms. Banietemad.

About the speaker

Rakhshan Banietemad

Rakhshan Banietemad is not only one of Iran’s most celebrated directors—she is a trailblazer who carved a path for women in a male-dominated industry. Beginning her career in documentary filmmaking, Banietemad shifted to feature films in the late 1980s and quickly established herself as a prominent voice in Iranian cinema.

Her works—filled with insightful, socially conscious storytelling—often center on women and marginalized communities. They explore themes like poverty, gender inequality, and the challenges of navigating a restrictive society.

Her notable films include Nargess (1992), for which she earned Best Director at the Fajr International Film Festival, and Under the Skin of the City (2000), the highest-grossing film in Iran that year.

Despite censorship and political pressure, Banietemad remains steadfast in her vision. “I would never self-censor or make compromises,” she said. Her fearless storytelling challenges oppression and amplifies Iran’s most vulnerable voices. The recipient of numerous awards, including recognition at the Venice International Film Festival, she stands as a powerful advocate for social change through the art of cinema.
